LGBTQIA+ Rights in Social Work

The social work profession positions practitioners as essential advocates and allies on the front lines of the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights. Historically, systemic discrimination has resulted in LGBTQIA+ individuals being denied equal access to public social services. This impact has been profound, with lasting consequences that have led to continued systemic trauma and a lack of legislative protections for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

To bring forth change, we must shift in the direction of supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals, as well as addressing the violence and discrimination they face on the individual and systemic levels. As social workers, we must equip ourselves with advocacy tools that help ensure the dignity and worth of all individuals, regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation.
